Senior Josiah Peters won the javelin and sophomore Sammy Hernandez was second in the high jump to highlight Philomath High’s individual performances Saturday at the Meet of Champions in Sweet Home.
The Philomath boys, competing with some of its athletes missing and not entering the relays, finished second in the team standings with 69.5 points, trailing only Blanchet Catholic’s 82. The girls, also without some athletes not competing, placed 10th with 32 points in a field won by Banks with 60.
Hernandez cleared 6 feet, 4 inches in a personal-best performance that equaled the top height of the day but he had to settle for second behind East Linn Christian sophomore Ryder Howard on the number-of-attempts tiebreaker. Hernandez moved up a few spots on the school’s all-time track charts for the event and is now tied for sixth with Ryan Zojanc, who went 6-4 in 1997.
Peters threw the javelin 181 feet, 2 inches to win the event by nearly 20 feet over the nearest competitor. He ranks No. 2 on the all-time charts with a throw of 187-8 that he had earlier this season at Elmira.
Junior Kaden Howard was second in the long jump at 21-10.5 and second in the triple jump at 40-7.5. Sophomore Dreyton Nuño was fourth in the high jump at 5-10 and sophomore Nathan Seits tied for sixth at 5-8. Junior Jamin Peters was fourth in both the shot put at 46-10.5 and the discus at 140-6.
