For the second time in two days, a Philomath High athlete won the girls high jump at a track and field meet.

Junior Hanna McDaniel cleared 5 feet even to take first place in the event at Saturday’s Junction City Invitational by 2 inches. It’s the second time this season she’s gone that height to win a meet — the first occurring on March 15 in a meet at Dallas. McDaniel didn’t compete in the high jump before this season.

PHS track and field athletes turn in notable performances at big-school meet

Competing in a big-school meet at Gresham on Friday afternoon, the handful of athletes from 4A Philomath put in a noteworthy performance. Junior Anneka Steen, senior Ahnika Tryon and junior Janice Hellesto for the girls and sophomore Josiah Peters and junior Warwick Bushnell for the boys all came away with victories at the Dean Nice…

The Warriors sent only a partial team to the Junction City meet. Most of the team’s top point-scoring athletes competed the previous day at Gresham.

Sophomore Leo Pausch was one of the few who competed in both meets. After running a personal-best time Friday in the 3,000, he came back Saturday, entered the 800 and finished second in 2:08.69.

Philomath had two runners place among the top six in the 1,500 with sophomore Lukas Hernandez finishing fourth in 4:27.15 and senior Lukas Dunn taking sixth in 4:29.81.

For the girls, most of their points came in the field events. In the discus, freshman Jordyn Hood took third with a 93-4 and senior Madison Juhl was fourth at 88-10. Junior Heidi Bacho placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 28-9.5 and junior Madison Provance was sixth with a 26-8.5.

Three PHS athletes were among the top six in the pole vault with junior Aspen Russell finishing second at 9-0, McDaniel fourth at 8-6 and junior Kyah Weeber sixth at 7-0. Elsewhere, Russell placed sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 31-0 and freshman Annaleise Brown was sixth in the 100 hurdles in 18.71.

North Eugene won the boys meet and Junction City was tops among the girls.

Philomath’s full team will be back together for the next meet, scheduled for May 3 at the Wally Ciochetti Invitational in Cottage Grove. The field events begin at 2 p.m. and the track events at 4:30 p.m.
