A comment overheard at Philomath High prompted an investigation and security sweep Wednesday, according to a message sent to district families by Superintendent of Schools Susan Halliday.

The statement — “Better not come to school tomorrow” — was heard by students and perceived by some as threatening, though it was allegedly made as a joke between students. Halliday said the comment made others who heard it uncomfortable.

“Whether a joke or not, such comments are not appropriate,” Halliday wrote in the message to families.

The Philomath Police Department assisted in the investigation, which included a security sweep of the high school conducted as a preventative measure. Following the investigation, officials determined the threat was unsupported.

Halliday thanked those who came forward to report the comment and emphasized that the district takes all such situations seriously.

“Our primary goal is to maintain a safe, supportive learning environment for all,” she said.
