FRIDAY, SEPT. 11
• 2:30 p.m. — Troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash on Highway 199 near Selma in Josephine County that took the life of Harvey Anthony Caron, 72, of Cave Junction. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that a southbound Ram 3500 pickup driven by Caron crossed the center median and northbound lane before striking several trees on the shoulder of the highway. Caron was pronounced deceased at the scene.
SATURDAY, SEPT. 12
• 9:09 a.m. — Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 101 south of Seaside in Clatsop County that took the life of Ronald Gregory Smith, 76, of Tillamook. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that a northbound Ford Explorer driven by Smith used the right shoulder to pass a northbound Toyota Highlander driven by an 84-year-old Seaside man, sideswiping it before re-entering the northbound lane. The Ford then crossed the southbound lane and struck an embankment and several trees on the shoulder. Smith was pronounced deceased at the scene. A passenger in the Ford, a 56-year-old Tillamook woman, sustained serious injuries and was flown to a Portland-area hospital. The Highlander’s driver was not injured. Investigators believe Smith may have suffered a medical emergency immediately before the crash.
• 8:56 p.m. — Troopers responded to a four-vehicle crash on Highway 30 near Svensen in Clatsop County that took the life of Markham Marshall Stangland, 65, of Warrenton. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that a westbound Ford Ranger pickup driven by Stangland crossed into the eastbound lane for unknown reasons and sideswiped an eastbound Ram 1500 pickup driven by a 25-year-old Aloha man. The Ranger continued westbound in the eastbound lane and struck an eastbound Ford Transit van driven by a 21-year-old Milwaukie man. An eastbound Ford F-100 pickup driven by a 29-year-old Longview, Washington, man was unable to stop and struck the Ranger and the van. Stangland was pronounced deceased at the scene and is not believed to have been wearing a seatbelt, OSP reported. The van was carrying 11 Oregon National Guard members returning from training at Camp Rilea, and the Ram 1500 carried four more members from the same training. Thirteen service members, including the van’s driver, were transported to a hospital, with three remaining hospitalized. The F-100’s driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital.
SUNDAY, SEPT. 13
• 2:36 a.m. — Troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash on Highway 35 near Hood River that took the life of Omar Julio Solano-Delgado, 33, of Hood River. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that a southbound Subaru Outback driven by Solano-Delgado collided with and went through a guardrail before traveling down a steep embankment. Solano-Delgado was pronounced deceased at the scene. Impairment is being investigated as a contributing factor.
MONDAY, SEPT. 14
• 9:44 a.m. — Troopers responded to a single-vehicle motorcycle crash on Highway 86 west of Richland in Baker County that took the life of Lance H. Madden, 55, of Loveland, Ohio. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that an eastbound BMW motorcycle driven by Madden failed to navigate a left-hand turn near Richland and entered the soft gravel shoulder. While attempting to correct back toward the roadway, the motorcycle flipped, and the rider and motorcycle traveled down an approximately 20-foot embankment toward the river. Madden was transported by Life Flight to an area hospital, where he later died.
• 9:16 p.m. — Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 26 in rural Wasco County that took the lives of Dagoberto Moreno-Prada, 31, of Eugene, and J Natividad Martinez-Colin, 35, of Vancouver, Washington. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that an eastbound Volvo semitruck hauling a 53-foot intermodal container, driven by Moreno-Prada, lost control while navigating a corner and rolled and slid into the westbound lane. A westbound Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Martinez-Colin struck the semitruck and trailer head-on. The intermodal container dislodged from the trailer, and both the container and the Jeep went through the guardrail and came to rest off the roadway. The semitruck rolled several more times before coming to rest on the roadway. Moreno-Prada and Martinez-Colin were both pronounced deceased at the scene.
