SATURDAY, JULY 12
• 4:12 p.m. — Troopers responded to a hit-and-run crash on Highway 18 near Grande Ronde that took the life of a 17-year-old boy. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that a 34-year-old Tillamook man was driving east on Highway 18 when the vehicle left its lane of travel and went onto the shoulder where a Nissan Altima was parked with a flat tire. Three 17-year-old boys were outside of the Nissan changing the tire when the Honda crashed into the vehicle and hit all three juveniles. The Honda did not stop and continued east down the highway. The three boys were transported to area hospitals with serious injuries and one later died. A 17-year-old girl who was a passenger inside of the Nissan at the time of the crash was not injured. The case was turned over to OSP detectives and it’s believed that the Honda’s driver left the country. An active warrant was issued for his arrest.
SUNDAY, JULY 20
• 9:13 p.m. — Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 99E near Harrisburg that took the life of Laura Marie Howard, 48, of Corvallis. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that Howard was driving west in a Toyota Tacoma on Highway 99E near Cartney Drive and entered the intersection without stopping at the stop sign. The Toyota was struck by a southbound semi-truck operated by a 31-year-old McMinnville man. Howard was declared deceased at the scene. The truck driver was reportedly not injured. A passenger in the semi, a 56-year-old Newberg man, was also reportedly not injured.
WEDNESDAY, JULY 23
• 3:59 p.m. — Troopers responded to a three-vehicle crash on Highway 30 about 8 miles south of Rainier in Columbia County that took the life of Gary Ronald Thomas, 90, of St. Helens. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that Thomas was driving a Chevrolet Cruze east on Highway 30 when for unknown reasons, the vehicle crossed into the westbound lane and struck a Saturn SL1 driven by a 20-year-old Longview, Washington, man and a Toyota Camry driven by a 61-year-old Rainier woman. Thomas was transported via helicopter to an area hospital with serious injuries and he later died. The Saturn’s driver was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. The Toyota’s driver was transported to the hospital in a private vehicle with minor injuries.
