The Philomath News launched Nov. 30, 2020 to provide news and sports coverage of the community. Since that time, the news site has added more than 800 posts in the forms of stories, columns, photo galleries, obituaries, etc. — an average of 25-plus per week.

Ninety free newsletters have also been distributed to those who signed up.

The News is off to a great start thanks to community support through memberships and advertising. Work remains to reach sustainability but it looks promising that the News will be here at least for a second year with hopes of building momentum for a long-term solution to local news.

That said, it’s time for me to take a one-week break from Aug. 2-8. The Philomath News is a labor of love, for sure, but it’s necessary to step away from it every once in a while after working nearly every day for the past eight months.

I’ll be back in the office on Monday, Aug. 9.
