The Philomath High School boys soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision on the road Thursday night at Stayton in an Oregon West Conference matchup.
The Warriors scored about 45 seconds into the game. Junior Jake Hernandez launched a long ball upfield and sophomore Sammy Hernandez hit a side volley toward the goal from about 40 yards. The shot bounced over the goalkeeper and Jake Hernandez finished in front of the net.
Stayton countered in the 20th minute on a goal by junior Josiah Dessieux. The game remained tied until late in the second half when junior Miguel Ceballos scored.
“The boys played great but it was a bit of a heartbreaker,” PHS coach Dave Ellis said.
The Warriors go to 8-3 overall and 4-3 in league play while Stayton, ranked No. 1, improves to 10-0-1 and 6-0-1.
