In the first meeting this softball season between Philomath and Newport, the Warriors pulled off a 10-6 victory over senior ace pitcher Hattie Imbler-Bremner and the Cubs. Philomath would need a repeat performance for a shot at finishing runner-up in the Oregon West Conference and advancing to the Class 4A state tournament.
Meeting on the coast Wednesday, Imbler-Bremner limited the Warriors to three hits while walking none and striking out 10 in Newport’s 7-0 victory.
Freshman Ahnika Tryon started in the circle for the Warriors and the game was a pitchers’ duel through the first three innings. Newport got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out, two-run single. The Cubs added three in the fifth and two in the sixth to build a strong lead.
Coach Travis King went to senior pitcher Kamden Combs with two outs in the fourth and she finished up for the Warriors.
Imbler-Bremner retired the first 14 PHS batters she faced and had a perfect game going into the fifth inning. Kyla Berger broke it up with an infield single. Tryon singled to center field to open the sixth but two batters later with one out, the Warriors lined into a double play at second base to end the threat.
In the seventh, freshman Melanie Baldwin hit a two-out double to right field but the game ended on a groundout to first base.
Tryon pitched 3-2/3 innings and allowed six hits, two earned runs and no walks with two strikeouts. Combs threw the last 2-1/3 innings and allowed two hits and one earned run with no walks and six strikeouts. Philomath committed four errors in the field.
Philomath was shut out for the first time in a league game since the 2015 season when then-OWC member Yamhill-Carlton pulled it off.
The Warriors end the season with an 8-5 record. Newport takes a 10-2 record into a game that was arranged with Astoria before advancing to the 4A tournament.
