The Philomath High School softball team came up short against Newport Monday afternoon in a game on the coast, 14-4.

The Cubs (2-11 overall, 2-2 Oregon West) led throughout but the Warriors did challenge the home team into the third inning. Down 4-0 in the second, Philomath cut the deficit in half on a two-run double by junior Janae Traglia. Juniors Zoee Howard and Lilia Leman, both of whom had reached base on walks, scored on the play.

Philomath (0-13, 0-4) pulled to within 5-3 in the top of the third when junior Hannah Bennett led off with a single, advanced to third when junior Kaylie Kohler reached on an error and scored on a ground ball to the shortstop by sophomore Emma May.

Newport had too much offensive firepower, however, and finished with 14 runs on 11 hits. Sophomore Addison Taylor and senior Victoria Johnson each had home runs for the Cubs.

The Warriors scored their fourth run in the fourth inning. Leman led off the inning with a single, advanced to second and third on passed balls and scored on a ball that junior Laighla Hockema put in play.

Bennett finished 2 for 3 at the plate to lead the Warriors offensively. Hockema and freshman Haley King each pitched two innings.

Philomath is scheduled to play at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at home against Sweet Home.
