Mathany Funeral Sunday — The funeral of the late Mrs. Margaret Mathany was held Sunday afternoon from the U.B. church in Philomath, Rev. Henderson officiating, and burial was in Newton cemetery. Mrs. Mathany, who was aged 71 years, passed away Saturday afternoon at the family home in Philomath. She is survived by a family of eight children, three daughters and five sons. Mr. Mathany died about six years ago.

Mrs. Mathany’s death was May 25, 1918 and she was buried the following day. The 1900 census showed Mrs. Mathany living in Wren with her husband, Robert, six children and one grandchild. The 1910 census shows her living on A Street in Philomath with her husband and a grandson. Robert and Margaret, whose maiden name was Hurlburt, were married Sept. 16, 1868, in Benton County. Biographical information in the Early Oregonians Index shows her birth as Aug. 7, 1846, at Yellow Creek, Chariton County, Missouri. Her parents were Abel Hurlburt and Mary Reed. According to the death certificate, Mrs. Mathany died from a cerebral hemorrhage with chronic arthritis listed as a contributing factor.
