DEAD PHILOMATH

Mrs. Justina Newton, past eighty years of age, died at her home in Philomath last night and the funeral will be held at the U. B. Radical church there on Thursday at 2:00 o’clock. She was a widow of N.P. Newton, who died about four years ago, and was a sister of Wm. Knotts, living north of Corvallis; also a sister to Mrs. James Robinson of Corvallis. Children are A.B. and W.H. Newton and Mrs. Cynthia Henkle of Philomath, Mrs. Laura Haines of Portland, and N.C. and Ernest P. Newton of South Bend, Wash. She was a pioneer of the county, an aunt of County Clerk Newton, and was widely known and highly respected.

PHILOMATH, Or., April 14. — (Special.) — The funeral of Mrs. Justina Newton, who died here Tuesday night, was held Wednesday from the First United Brethren Church, Rev. D. L. Fields officiating. Mrs. Newton with her family was one of the earliest settlers in Benton County.
Her father, William Knotts, settled on a claim two and one-half miles from Corvallis, where the daughter, Justina, was married to Norris P. Newton in 1853. Six children survive: Abiatha B. Newton, Walter H. Newton, Cynthia Henkle, of Philomath; Harvey C. Newton and Ernest P. Newton, of South Bend, Wash., and Laura Haines of Portland.
Editor’s note: The reference in the Gazette-Times obituary to a son, N.C. Newton, of South Bend, Wash., appears to have been a typographical error. The Oregonian obituary refers to the son as Harvey C. Newton, which is consistent with published genealogical information. The age reference to “past eighty years” also appears to be incorrect with Mrs. Newton’s age of 79 at death.
