J. H. Benton, an aged resident of Philomath, and one of Benton county’s well known citizens, died at his home in that little city early yesterday morning. Funeral services were held at Philomath at 2 o’clock this afternoon, with interment in the Newton cemetery, a few miles west of Corvallis. Deceased was the father of A. W. Benton, an employe of The Toggery, and one of this city’s best known salesmen. Mr. Benton went to Philomath in response to a message announcing his father’s critical condition, and attended the funeral this afternoon.

Editor’s note: The Oregon State Board of Health’s certificate of death shows his full name as Joseph Henry Benton, a farmer who was 74 at death. He was born April 15, 1839, in New York state, and died May 5, 1913, in Philomath. Family history records available online indicate that he was born in Lockport, New York, to Joseph Benton and Phebe Payne. Those records show that he married Elizabeth Smith in the mid-1860s and together they had nine children. His wife died in 1920 in Missouri and is buried there.
