The Central Coast Ranger District of the Siuslaw National Forest is accepting applications for commercial matsutake mushroom collection permits with the deadline for submissions approaching later this month.
The Forest Service will issue 100 commercial-use permits on a first-come, first-served basis for the 2025 harvesting season. Applications must be submitted by Aug. 25, with mailed forms requiring a postmark no later than Aug. 20.
Commercial permits, priced at $250 each, are required for anyone collecting more than six matsutake mushrooms per day or for those planning to sell their harvest. All permit holders must be at least 18 years old and provide valid state or federal identification. The permits remain valid through Dec. 31.
Prospective harvesters can submit applications through multiple channels — by mail to the Central Coast Ranger District (P.O. Box 400, Waldport, OR 97394), in-person at district offices (Reedsport or Waldport), or via email to pdl_r6_siuslaw_frontliners@usda.gov.
More information and request forms are available in both English and Spanish on the Siuslaw National Forest website.
The Forest service will begin distributing permits the week of Aug. 25 in the order applications were received. Successful applicants will receive phone notification and can choose to receive their permit by email or pick it up at a district office. Payment is due when permits are issued, with options including credit cards, debit cards, checks, or money orders made payable to the USDA, Forest Service.
After Sept. 2, any remaining permits will be available for in-person purchase at the Reedsport and Waldport offices. Those offices are open from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. weekdays.
