The Philomath High School boys soccer team lost for the first time this season with a 3-0 nonconference setback Thursday at Marist Catholic High School.
The Eugene school took a 1-0 lead early in the first half and the score remained that way most of the game. The Spartans were able to score a second goal at about the halfway point of the second half and then padded the lead with a third goal late.
“I thought we were on top of them from the 10th through 60th minutes but we couldn’t finish and they had a considerable amount of luck in each goal,” PHS coach Dave Ellis said. “The third goal came late when we had to gamble and push forward.”
Marist Catholic (2-2) came into the game after falling Tuesday at North Marion, 4-0. The Tigers were ranked No. 6 in the most-recent OSAAtoday coaches poll.
The Warriors (1-1) will play their first home game Sept. 19 against Junction City. The Tigers are off to a 1-2-1 start this season and will face Molalla on the road before their trip to Philomath. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
