The Philomath High School girls soccer team played its first true road game of the season Thursday and lost a 3-0 decision in Eugene to Marist Catholic, the defending Class 4A state champions.
The Spartans, ranked No. 1 in the OSAAtoday 4A coaches’ poll, scored twice in the first half for the early advantage. The two teams played evenly in the second half until Marist was able to score on a penalty kick following a PHS hand ball.
“We started tentative and too defensive in the first half but adjusted and played a good second half and had some chances on goal,” PHS coach Mat Phelps said.
On the defensive end, the coach had praise for his goalkeeper.
“Makena (Sleeman) played a great game in goal and made several big saves,” Phelps said.
The Warriors, ranked No. 4 by the coaches, go to 3-1 on the season and will play Tuesday at home vs. Junction City. Marist Catholic improves to 3-1.
