The drivers of a passenger vehicle and a logging truck sustained major injuries in a crash Friday morning at the intersection of Bellfountain Road and Llewellyn Road, Philomath Fire and Rescue and the Benton County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene of the crash at 10:42 a.m. Oct. 25. Chancy Ferguson, Philomath Fire and Rescue’s fire chief, was the first to reach the scene to find a logging truck that had struck a vehicle on the passenger side and then jackknifed.
“The passenger car was damaged enough to trap a female driver and was knocked to the side of the road, straddling a drainage ditch,” Philomath Fire and Rescue Deputy Fire Chief and Public Information Officer Rich Saalsaa said.
The Benton County Sheriff’s Office’s preliminary investigation indicated that a Chevrolet Equinox SUV driven by a 67-year-old Eugene woman was headed west on Llewellyn Road and failed to yield at the Bellfountain Road intersection. The logging truck, driven by a 59-year-old Waldport man, was heading south and T-boned the SUV.
The woman was extricated from her vehicle by a Corvallis Fire ambulance crew. Philomath Fire and Rescue, which responded with an engine company of three personnel, extricated the male driver of the logging truck.
Both individuals were transported in serious condition in separate Corvallis Fire ambulances to Samaritan Regional Medical Center.
Benton County Public Works closed the road for several hours while the logging truck’s company supplied equipment to remove logs and debris.
In addition to BCSO and Corvallis Fire, Philomath Fire and Rescue Capt. Viktor Bovbjerg also assisted at the crash site. Ferguson served as the incident commander on the call.
