The Benton County Historical Society is teaming up with the Braver Angels organization to host a community debate focused on immigration policy. The free public event, scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 25 at Philomath Museum, aims to foster understanding across political divides rather than declare winners and losers.

The evening’s discussion will center on the statement, “Our immigration policy should prioritize economic benefit to the United States over the extended families of immigrants.”

Community members interested in attending the event are encouraged to RSVP in advance.

Unlike traditional debates, the Braver Angels format emphasizes listening and comprehension over persuasion. The organization describes its mission as bringing together Americans from across the political spectrum to bridge partisan divides and strengthen democratic discourse.

“We try to understand the other side’s point of view on issues, even if we don’t agree with it,” according to Braver Angels’ organizational philosophy. “We engage those we disagree with, looking for common ground and ways to work together. Our goal is not to change other people’s views of issues, but to change their views of each other.”

Braver Angels operates as a nonpartisan citizens’ organization that unites Americans regardless of their political affiliation in what they call “a working alliance to depolarize America.” The group’s approach focuses on fostering mutual understanding rather than ideological conversion.

The debate is being held in support of the Citizens Commission on Immigration, an organization designed to demonstrate to Congress and the nation that Americans with differing views on immigration can find common ground.
