To the Editor:
When I told a neighbor that I was considering a run for city councilor, he asked what my platform would be. I admit, I was caught a bit off-guard by the question because I hadn’t thought of it quite like that.
I think I told him something like: “In my daily life, I try to approach things with a level head, even temperament, and logic, and I’ll do the same as a councilor.” Those things are true, but it did feel like I was reaching for something to say since I was caught a bit flat-footed.
Since then, I’ve had some time to think … and my response sounds pretty simple, maybe even boring.
Here’s what I would say to my neighbor now: “I live and work in Philomath, and I care about its present and its future, and I’m willing to volunteer and serve. There are different ways to serve, of course, so why serve as a city councilor? I think I have leadership skills and the ability to make good decisions. As a bank manager and commercial loan officer, I understand how to lead, how to listen, how to motivate, how to assess risk and mitigate, as well as holding the general skill set of financial analysis. I approach things with a level head and logic, and I am committed to open, honest and respectful communication.”
Wow, that sounds boring! If that’s what you’re looking for, maybe I’m your man! So, I don’t have a catchy platform like “a chicken in every pot!” but I think I have the personality, energy, moral compass, communication style and skill set to serve Philomath well, and I’m asking for your vote in November! Thank you!
