Philomath High’s three-game winning streak in boys basketball ended Saturday night with an 81-69 loss to Marshfield in a tournament hosted by Scappoose.

The Pirates (6-2) shot out to a 25-10 lead in the first quarter with a barrage of 3-pointers. Marshfield buried four treys in the first eight minutes and had 10 for the game. Over the final three quarters, the game was fairly even with Philomath outscoring the opponent, 59-56.

Four players hit double figures for the Warriors (4-5) led by junior Hamish McConnell’s 19 points. Coming off the bench, McConnell had his top scoring output of the season on seven field goals, including a 3-pointer, and hitting 4 of 7 free throws.

Junior Jamin Peters found some success inside and finished with 18 points. Junior Esias Sapp had three 3-pointers and finished with 17 points. Sophomore Dreyton Nuño scored 11, which included 5 for 5 from the foul line.

McConnell, Peters, Sapp and Nuño combined for 65 of the team’s 69 points.

Besides 3-pointers, foul shooting also figured into the outcome with the Pirates making 27 of 34 (79.4%) free throws compared to Philomath’s 13 of 24 (54.2%). From the floor, the Warriors had a 26-22 shooting edge.

Hot-shooting freshman guard Max Ainsworth scored 33 points to lead Marshfield. Four of Ainsworth’s 10 field goals were 3-pointers and he made 9 of 10 free throws. Sophomore Brett Butler Jr. scored 19, sophomore Austin Salter had 12 and Junior Keller Vinyard finished with 11.

Philomath will next play the host school at 5 p.m. Sunday. The Indians defeated Napavine (Washington), 74-67, and will bring a 7-1 record into the game vs. the Warriors.
