The 162-year-old cemetery on the edge of Philomath could use a few extra bodies to help with maintenance.
This past spring the Mount Union Cemetery Association’s board started organizing work parties that take place on the second Saturday each month over a three-hour stretch from 9 a.m.-noon. The organization welcomes anyone to join in the effort to keep the historic cemetery on Mount Union Avenue in shape.
Volunteer Janet Cornelius said there are a variety of tasks. The next work party is coming up this Saturday, Aug. 12.
“Light duty includes cleaning headstones, clearing away faded flowers, washing benches and general pick-up of trash, sticks and debris,” Cornelius said. “Heavier tasks include raking, mowing, weed eating, trimming shrubs and hauling dirt to fill in holes made by the ground squirrels and voles.”
Cornelius added that anyone who wants to help out on a day and time other than on those designated Saturdays, other times can be arranged.
