The Philomath Rotary Club will explore the extraordinary leadership lessons of polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton at its upcoming meeting at noon Tuesday, July 15.
The meeting, to be held at Peace Lutheran Church, will feature Rotarian and historian Erin Haynes presenting “Ten Rules of Leadership: Shackleton — A Story Worth Remembering.” The program examines Shackleton’s legendary Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914-16, which became one of history’s most remarkable survival stories when his ship Endurance became trapped in Antarctic ice.
The presentation draws from material developed by Dennis Perkins, a noted graduation speaker and author of an award-winning book about the expedition. Perkins identified key leadership principles demonstrated by Shackleton during the 22-month ordeal that saw him successfully lead his entire crew to safety against impossible odds.
“Erin revisits a story of the past to show people today what is possible,” said Fred Shaub of the Philomath Rotary Club. “The listeners attending this meeting will have ideas on how to identify the strategies that can be applied to improve leadership.”
The meeting is open to the public with lunch provided. Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP via email to rotaryfred@hotmail.com for meal-planning purposes.
The Philomath Rotary Club meets regularly to hear speakers on topics of community interest while supporting local and international service projects.
