A 67-year-old Shady Cove man was killed over the weekend when the truck he was driving crashed on Highway 20 about halfway between Newport and Eddyville and just east of Toledo, Oregon State Police reported.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene at 11:55 p.m. Sunday in an area near milepost 11. According to OSP’s preliminary investigation, David Damon was driving a Peterbilt CMV towing an unloaded chip trailer heading east when he drove onto the shoulder before overcorrecting. The CMV crossed the highway before striking several trees on the westbound shoulder.

Damon’s injuries were fatal and he was pronounced deceased. Highway 20 was closed for approximately eight hours following the crash.

Lane usage, seatbelt usage and distracted driving are being investigated as contributing factors, OSP reported.

Oregon State Police was assisted by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Toledo Fire Department, Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
