Sophomore Sammy Hernandez cleared 6 feet, 6 inches in the high jump Saturday to headline Philomath High’s appearance at the Stayton Invitational.
Hernandez’s personal-best clearance ties him for fourth on the school’s all-time list, matching the mark set by Adrian Bowman in 2003. Only three Philomath athletes have jumped higher — Alan Chambers (6-8, 1981), Ethan Kennedy (6-8, 1985) and Scott Radetich (6-7, 1992).
PHS senior Josiah Peters won the javelin with a throw of 186 feet, 6 inches — edging La Salle Prep senior Sterling Dressel by just 5 inches. Peters has now won the javelin in five of his seven meets this season and his season-best of 187-8, set at the Elmira Relays, remains No. 1 in Class 4A by more than 7 feet.
Elsewhere in the field events, senior Blake Hauck was third in the pole vault at 11-6, junior Jamin Peters took fifth in the shot put at 50-1, junior Kaden Howard was fifth in the long jump at 21-2 and went 5-8 to tie for sixth in the high jump.
