The Philomath High School baseball team opened the season on Wednesday with an 8-2 loss at Gladstone.

The Warriors were held to just three hits in the contest by Gladstone’s pitchers — starter Hayden Smith and reliever Brysen Bryan. Smith retired 14 straight PHS batters during a stretch from the final out of the first through the first out of the sixth.

Philomath (0-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Carson Gerding singled and would eventually come around to score. The Gladiators responded, however, with one run in the second, two runs in the third, one run in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to pull away.

The Warriors scored their second run in the sixth inning. Cameron Ordway reached base with a one-out walk and scored after Gerding hit a double.

Gerding went 2 for 3 in the game for the Warriors. Ben Hoffman had a 2-for-2 game for Gladstone (1-0).

Ordway, David Griffith and Kash Lindsey all saw time on the mound for Philomath. The starter, Ordway, had six strikeouts and one walk with four hits and three earned runs in 3-1/3 innings.

Philomath will next play at 4:30 p.m. Friday at home against Henley.
