The Philomath High School girls tennis team opened the season on its home courts Thursday with a 4-3 victory over Class 5A West Albany.

The team’s top two singles players dominated with sophomore Bailey Bell and freshman Adele Beckstead both defeating their opponents, 6-0, 6-0. Senior Sophie Robinson and junior Phoebe Dodson played together in competition for the first time and handled their opponents, 6-1, 6-4.

Philomath’s No. 4 doubles team of freshman Heidi Bacho and sophomore Elise Reese had a fight on their hands in the first set but went on to defeat their opponents, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.

The No. 3 singles match between sophomore Daniella Carlisle and sophomore Riley Cornell was suspended after two sets. Cornell had won the first set, 6-4, and Carlisle took the second set, 6-3.

PHS sophomores Nadia Durski and Lorelei Schell were competitive at No. 2 doubles but lost, 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Ava Simmons and junior Dristi Patel also won some sets but dropped their match at No. 3 doubles, 6-2. 6-3.

The team season opener had been scheduled for Monday at Blanchet Catholic but it was rained out.

Philomath’s schedule shows the next match for March 29 at Lebanon.
