Bicycle vs. horse: Dick Kiger, of Benton county, has a novel race on his hands. He has bet $100 that he has a horse that can beat any Benton county bicyclist from the mill just this side of Corvallis to the Benton county side of the Albany bridge, a distance of over ten miles. A race has been arranged between one of the teachers in the O.A.C. and the Kiger horse, and will take place in a few days. Considerable money is being put up on the race in Corvallis and it is exciting a great deal of interest. (Published June 13, 1899, in the Oregon Statesman, Salem).

KV quilter: Quilting 400 quilts in the last 17 years — that will soon be the record of Mrs. Rovia Price of Kings Valley as she has quilted with the help of her daughter, 391 since she began back in the depression days of 1932. According to Mrs. Price, she has quilted 143 alone and 248 were done with the help of her daughter, Mrs. Beryl Pimeo. When Mrs. Price took her first quilt on March 24, 1932, she charged $2. Now the price for quilting has gone up to $6 but still low, according to the champion quilter of Benton county. (Published June 16, 1949, in the Benton County Herald).

PHS softball: Philomath dropped two District 5AA-A playoff games last week putting an end to their 1984 softball season. The Warriors lost to Gervais 81, in a game to decide the number one representative to the state playoffs, and then lost to Sweet Home 6-1, in a game to decide the number two seed. The losses ended the Warriors’ season at 17-5. Although the Warriors did not earn a trip to the state tournament, a 10-3 league record earned them a share of the district title with Central and Gervais. In addition, three Warriors were named to the first team … Christie Deines, a senior, catcher, Janice Robinson, a junior, first baseman and Kerri Moos, a sophomore, center fielder.
