Freshman’s first varsity win highlights Stayton Invite title for PHS girls

Just two meets into her high school running career, freshman Adele Beckstead can already claim an individual varsity cross-country title. Beckstead finished strong while breaking away from Newport senior Aliya Larsen and won the Stayton Invitational on Saturday.

In addition to Beckstead’s performance, the PHS girls had four other runners finish in the top 15 as the Warriors easily won the team title.

For the boys, South Albany — a squad ranked No. 4 in Class 5A — edged Philomath for the team title. Junior Brody Bushnell placed second overall 10 seconds behind South Albany senior Logan Parker.

Beckstead covered the Stayton Middle School Nature Trails course in 20:18 to win by a margin of 7 seconds over Larsen, who placed sixth at the state meet this past spring. Philomath junior Ingrid Hellesto was right there as well in third place with a time of 20:43, edging Woodburn senior Myranda Marquez at the finish line.

Freshman Kateri Pindell had a top-10 showing with ninth in 21:45. Senior Kaeleigh Houchin placed 13th in 22:02 and freshman Hanna McDaniel followed in 14th in 22:38. Also running varsity were senior Audrey Gerding (18th, 22:54) and freshman Hallie Morrison (22:59).

Philomath won with 21 points with the host school in second with 54, Newport third with 71 and Harrisburgh fourth with 93. Only four schools had complete girls’ teams.

Bushnell’s second-place showing in the boys’ race “was impressive for a hilly course, especially since his heal had been rubbed raw during the race,” PHS coach Joe Fulton said. Bushnell’s time ended up at 16:42.

Junior Mateo Candanoza and junior Ben Hernandez both had top-10 finishes. Candanoza was fifth in 17:21 and Hernandez placed eighth in 17:51. Junior Jesse Erickson was a respectable 14th in 18:19 and senior Mark Grimmer rounded out the team scoring with 23rd in 18:57.

Freshman Warwick Bushnell also ran varsity and was 34th in 19:56.

In the 3-kilometer junior varsity races, Philomath’s girls turned in a perfect team score of 15 and actually had the top seven individual finishers, led by winner Alexa Eckhold.

Philomath will compete this coming Saturday at Lane Community College in Eugene for the Northwest Classic. The varsity races are scheduled for starts of 12:20 p.m. for the girls and 1 p.m. for the boys.
