Benton County residents have an opportunity this weekend and into Monday to recycle old mattresses and box springs at no cost through a special collection event at the Benton County Fairgrounds.
The event runs Saturday through Monday, June 13-15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
While the collection is hosted by Oregon State University as part of its annual Great Move-Out — a year-end effort to keep usable and recyclable items out of the landfill as students vacate campus housing — organizers emphasize that participation is open to all Benton County residents, not just students.
The recycling is made possible through the Mattress Recycling Council’s Bye Bye Mattress program, which operates under an Oregon state law requiring mattress recycling infrastructure. This is the second year the program has partnered with OSU’s Great Move-Out.
The Mattress Recycling Council is a nonprofit founded by the bedding industry. It operates recycling programs in Oregon and several other states, recycling nearly 2 million mattresses annually.
Residents with questions about the event can contact OSU at 541-737-7347. Those looking for additional drop-off locations or future collection events can search by zip code at ByeByeMattress.com.
