Philomath’s Downtown Safety and Streetscape Improvement Project’s road construction on Main Street and Applegate Street will take a break from Dec. 23 through Jan. 2, the Oregon Department of Transportation announced.

Beginning in late November and heading into the holiday break, workers have been cutting and digging up portions of the road to install new pipe and other pieces of a new stormwater drainage system.

The $12.3 million project’s primary work relates to narrowing roads, creating more space for parking, widening sidewalks, installing pedestrian amenities, adding a two-way cycling route and adding “bulb-outs” to increase safety.

Businesses in the project area remain open during construction. On-street parking will not be available in the areas under construction. Alternate routes for pedestrian access to businesses will be marked, ODOT said.

ODOT estimates construction to continue into 2024.
