The Philomath City Council filled one of two vacant seats on the Planning Commission Monday night with the appointment of local citizen Kyle Cupp.

The appointment was to fill a four-year term that runs through the end of 2028.

Cupp, a writer and strategist for a human resources tech company, had applied to fill a vacant seat on the Philomath City Council. That appointment went to retired firefighter Rich Saalsaa but Cupp applied for not only the Planning Commission but also the Budget Committee.

“As Philomath is the city of volunteers and there is a need for citizen volunteers on both of these committees, I feel called to do my part to contribute,” Cupp wrote in his application. “It’s an exciting time in our city and I’m happy to be engaged in whatever way I can.”

Cupp’s appointments to the Planning Commission and Budget Committee were unanimous. The council also filled another vacancy on the Budget Committee with local resident Nichole Hasley.

“I have always been genuinely interested in city works and care deeply about our community,” Hasley said in her application. “I am hoping this position would be a good stepping stone into learning more and possibly expanding my roles with the city someday.”

Both of the Budget Committee terms run for three years through the end of 2027.

The city is still looking to fill the other Planning Commission seat. There are also two remaining vacancies on the Budget Committee — one position has one year remaining on a term and the other has two years remaining.

For those with an interest, the city has online forms available on its website. Questions can be directed to the city recorder at 541-929-6148 (option 5) or crystal.weber@philomathoregon.gov.
