Coach sees positives coming out of season-opening volleyball loss to 5A power

The Philomath High School volleyball team opened the season Thursday night on the road at Class 5A Crook County and lost in three sets, 25-18, 25-18 and 30-28. Despite the outcome, coach Denee Newton said her players came out of the match with an eye on what they can accomplish this season and in what areas they need to improve.

“It was a good game actually,” Newton said. “The girls know their potential and are setting goals.”

Senior Sage Kramer “had some incredible hits to the 10-foot line,” Newton said, and she finished with a team-high 13 kills. Senior setter Reagan Larson had 21 assists. Junior Abigail Brown had good numbers in the serve receive department with a 2.2.

“We served at 93% and plan to get our passing where it needs to be to push us over this hump,” Newton said.

The match was the second of the season for Crook County, the first being a four-set victory at Burns. In the preseason 5A coaches poll, the Prineville school was ranked No. 5.

Philomath (0-1) will hit the court on Tuesday for its home opener, a league matchup against Cascade. The Cougars will bring a 2-0 record into the match after victories over Marist Catholic and Molalla.
