SMART Reading, a statewide children’s literacy nonprofit, is seeking volunteers in Philomath, the organization announced.

SMART Reading provides support for young readers such as individualized reading time and access to books. Locally, programs serve students at Clemens Primary, Philomath Elementary and Kings Valley Charter School.

Volunteers are needed to read to children or classrooms and site coordinators that oversee weekly sessions.

“We are very excited to keep supporting early literacy and a love for reading for the kids in our community,” Laurie McNichols, SMART Reading South Valley area director said through a press release. “Both volunteer readers and site coordinators are the key to being able to keep our programs running.”

Volunteer readers spend an hour a week reading with kindergarten through third-grade children. Site coordinators spend two to eight hours each week leading the program at their site.
