In a key Oregon West Conference softball showdown Thursday, Cascade defended its home turf with a 4-1 victory over Philomath. The victory gives the Cougars control of the Oregon West Conference with a 9-1 record with Newport at 7-2 and Philomath now 6-3.
The Warriors (6-4 overall) will play a makeup game at 1 p.m. Saturday against visiting Sisters. Philomath has won five of its last six league games. The Outlaws lost to the Warriors in their season opener, 15-5, but are coming off back-to-back wins of 21-7 over La Pine and 16-0 over Woodburn.
In Thursday’s road game, the Warriors got runners on base in the second and third innings but couldn’t get anything across the plate. Cascade broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third with some help from the Warriors — both runs that scored were batters who had reached base on errors.
Philomath cut the deficit in half in the top of the fourth. Melanie Baldwin hit a one-out double to left and Mia Bennett followed with an infield single. The run scored on a Presley Reichhuber ground out.
The Warriors threatened in the fifth with Ahnika Tryon opening the inning with a single but she was thrown out on a steal attempt. Kaili Saathoff later hit a two-out single but was stranded when the inning ended on a fly to center.
Cascade increased its lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run single. The Warriors were unable to get on base over the final two innings.
Baldwin went 2 for 3, both doubles, and Saathoff was 2 for 3 as well.
Kamden Combs pitched 4-1/3 innings and allowed four hits, two earned runs and two walks while striking out five. Tryon threw the last 1-2/3 innings and allowed one hit and one walk with one strikeout.
Hannah Wallman threw a complete-game six-hitter for the Cougars (10-2 overall). Abby Jeppsen was 2 for 4 and Alexis Bales drove in two runs.
