Philomath High senior Mateo Candanoza figured into all four of the team’s goals in a 4-0 road victory on Thursday over Newport. Candanoza had a hat trick with goals in the 13th, 60th and 72nd minutes and then recorded an assist on the team’s fourth goal by senior Seth Arthurs.
The Warriors up their record to 8-0-2 overall and 5-0-2 in the Oregon West. Philomath and Stayton are tied for first place in the league standings and those two teams will battle in the regular-season finale on Oct. 25.
Before Philomath plays the Eagles, however, the team will need to take care of business with home games this coming Tuesday against North Marion and then on Oct. 20 against Sweet Home.
Candanoza gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute with an assist to Arthurs. Philomath maintained that slim lead through halftime and well into the second half. Candanoza scored in the 60th minute on a free kick and his third goal came in the 72nd minute on open play.
Arthurs finished out the scoring with an assist by Candanoza in the 75th minute.
