Former Philomath High baseball assistant coach Lance Faxon is heading up the program at Cottage Grove High School.

The Cottage Grove Sentinel published a preseason a story about the coaching change back in mid-March.

“We played Cottage Grove a ton when I was at Philomath,” Faxon told reporter Kendrick Murphy. “They were always super competitive games. So, getting a chance to be in a program that not too far in the past won a league title. And a lot of coaches don’t get the opportunity to take over a program that’s had the kind of success that Cottage Grove has had in the recent past.”

The Lions are in a rebuilding phase with a 1-5 start to the season. Sweet Home beat Cottage Grove, 14-0, earlier this week — ouch — and Newport got them last week, 10-1. So it looks like Faxon has some work ahead to right the program.

“Just getting that normalcy back is going to be good,” Faxon told the Sentinel. “The juniors have never played a nonleague baseball game and that’s just crazy to think about. So that part will be awesome, just getting back to the way things should be.”

Faxon works as a teacher at Cottage Grove High.

Although the Lions are a Class 4A school, Philomath and Cottage Grove are not currently scheduled to play each other. Too bad, that would be a fun game with the whole mentor vs. student storyline.

Philomath did play on Cottage Grove’s field last week but that didn’t turn out too good for the Warriors with a 6-0 loss.
