Boys win, girls lose in tennis duals vs. Molalla

The Philomath High School boys tennis team crushed Molalla on Tuesday afternoon on the home courts, 8-0. The Warriors all seven matches contested on the court in straight sets and the eighth by default.

Dawson Beckstead and Andrew Leonard continued their domination in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots, respectively, with both going to 4-0 on the season. Beckstead defeated his opponent, 6-0, 6-0, and Leonard was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over his opponent. Leonard hasn’t lost a set this season.

Teddy Benbow at No. 3 singles won 6-4, 6-3 to improve to 3-0 — all three of those wins in straight sets. Tomas Harris competed in singles for the first time this season and won, 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles, Nick Stucki and Dylan Bell went to 4-0 on the season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Judah Bacho and Mark Grimmer teamed up for a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, Noah Curtis and Gradin Fairbanks played together for the first time and were 7-5, 6-2 winners. PHS won by default at No. 4 singles with Jace Barrett and newcomer Ian Alba entered for the Warriors.

As a team, the boys remain undefeated at 4-0. They will play at home again Thursday when Sisters visits the new PHS courts for the first time.

Philomath’s girls were on the road at Molalla and was handed its first setback of the season, 6-2.

Bailey Bell took down her opponent at No. 1 singles in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. The No. 2 doubles team of K Bacho and Sierra Johnson, playing together for the first time this season, got the victory, 6-3, 6-2.

The No. 1 doubles team of Chloe Jurva and Atira Fairbanks lost for the first time this season, 7-6, 3-6, 7-5.

The girls’ record goes to 3-1 and they will play Thursday at Sisters and Friday at home against Corbett.
