In the team’s final regular-season meet before competing in the conference championships, junior Kaden Howard won the long jump and sophomore Sammy Hernandez took first in the high jump to lead Philomath’s boys to a fourth-place finish at Friday’s Wally Ciochetti Invitational at Cottage Grove.

Howard took the long jump by just one-fourth of an inch over runner-up Jeremiah Brunick of Henley with 22 feet, 1 inch. In the triple jump, Howard was also in the hunt but settled for second at 41-8.25.

Meanwhile, over in the high jump, Hernandez cleared 6-4 to outduel Crook County senior Alexander Jarrell. Hernandez has won the event at three meets this season, including May 9 at Stayton when he went 6-6. Sophomore Nathan Seits tied for fourth in the event at 5-10.

Junior Jamin Peters was second in the shot put at 50-3, just 2.5 inches behind winner Rowan Caesar of Marist. Peters took third in the discus at 144-5. Senior Blake Hauck tied for eighth in the pole vault at 11-6.

On the track, senior Leo Pausch was second in the 3,000 meters in 9:02.00 and senior Lukas Hernandez finished third in 9:15.45. Hernandez also placed sixth in the 800 in 2:02.73. Junior Bryce Hruska was sixth in the 300 hurdles in 43.69.

The Philomath boys scored 66 points to finish fourth behind meet winner Henley (160), Marist Catholic (94) and Crook County (73).

In the girls portion of the meet, sophomore Cassidy Smart placed second in the 1,500 with a personal-best time of 4:45.13. She placed fourth in the 800 in 2:23.31.

In the relays, Smart, junior Jordyn Hood, freshman Sienna Bushnell and sophomore Reagan Nuño placed second in 4:09.53. Nuño, Bushnell, Hood and sophomore Kya Bolton were sixth in 51.83 in the 4-by-100.

Nuño had a second-place showing in the 400 in 1:00.70, a personal best, and Bushnell was fifth in 1:01.72. Hood placed third in the 100 hurdles with a personal-best 17.25. Sophomore Libby Kramer finished sixth in the 3,000 in 11:39.61.

In the field events, junior Hailey Eckhold finished third in the triple jump at 32-1.75 and eighth in the shot put at 31-7.5. 

Hood took fifth in the discus at 105-2. Bolton and junior Annaleise Brown both went 32-0 in the triple jump, which tied them for fourth. Bushnell placed sixth in the long jump at 14-11.5. 

The girls placed fifth with 68 points in a field won by Klamath Union with 98.

Philomath now turns its attention to the Oregon West Conference Championships on May 22-23 at Stayton.
