Junior David Griffith and senior Alek Russell hit back-to-back doubles in the third inning and Philomath got a quality start from pitcher Cameron Ordway in a 7-3 victory Monday in the Oregon West Conference opener for both teams.

Ordway put in a solid performance on the mound with 12 strikeouts over 6-2/3 innings. Ordway threw 112 pitches and allowed seven hits and three walks. One of the runs allowed was unearned.

The Cougars had seven errors in the game.

Cascade held leads of 2-1 after the first and 3-1 going into the bottom of the third. Zac Rife hit a bases-loaded single to drive in two runs in the top of the first. And in the third, Caleb Boyles scored on a passed ball.

Philomath’s run in the bottom of the first occurred when Ordway singled and later scored on a Griffith sac fly to left.

Silas Barton led off the third inning with an infield single and Ordway reached on an error. Both runners moved up on an error and then Carson Gerding got aboard on a fielder’s choice to load the bases.

Griffith drove home Barton and Ordway on a double to left field to tie the game, 3-3. Alek Russell then hit a line-drive single to left to plate Gerding and Griffith. Russell later scored on a one-out single to center by Mason Stearns.

Philomath added another run in the fifth. Griffith opened the inning with a walk and later scored with two outs when Chad Russell reached on an error.

Ordway and Stearns both went 2 for 3 at the plate. Griffith collected three RBIs. Brayden Shenk finished the game at pitcher, retiring the only batter he faced on a ground ball to third.

Philomath and Cascade are scheduled to play the second game of their series on Wednesday on the Cougars’ home field.

In a game from Saturday played at Cottage Grove, the Warriors dropped a 6-0 decision to Hidden Valley. Mustangs pitcher Isaac Hill tossed a 1-hitter against the PHS lineup.
