The Philomath High School girls basketball team ran into the hottest team in Class 3A Wednesday night in a 59-37 loss on the road.
Amity, ranked No. 1 with a 24-0 record, jumped out to a 22-9 lead after the first quarter and maintained its rhythm throughout the contest. The 3A Warriors led their visitors, 34-16, at halftime and 45-26 going into the fourth quarter.
Philomath (16-4) struggled on both ends in the first half to get into a hole. The 4A Warriors shot just 18.2% through the first two quarters compared to Amity’s 40.6%. For the game, PHS shot 31.1% to Amity’s 40.0%.
Sophomore Reagan Heiken had a team-high nine points for Philomath. Senior teammate Zoee Howard chipped in eight. Senior Anneka Steen, junior Isabelle Muir and senior Mica Boynton had 3-pointers.
For Amity, three players hit double figures — junior Alyssa McMullen’s 15, junior Eliza Nisly’s 12 and senior Saralynn Grove’s 11.
Philomath is scheduled to get back into conference play Friday with a 7 p.m. tipoff at North Marion.
