The Philomath High School girls wrestling team competed Friday at the Jack Berger Girls Invitational in Silverton with both local entries placing among the top six.

Sophomore Alexis Pettit placed fourth in the 100-pound weight division. She lost her opening match to Hillsboro’s Maria Siquina Can before winning on a pin in 2:59 over Tualatin’s Ronita Sarkar in the consolation semifinals. That put her in the third-place match where she lost on a pin to Gresham’s Leahna Reyes.

Freshman Addison Liddell placed sixth at 145 pounds with a 2-2 record. Liddell opened with a loss to Hood River Valley’s Xiomara Gordian Gomez but regrouped in the consolation round to defeat Westview’s Arwyn Gallardo with a pin in 1:55 and Beaverton’s Melia Landschoot with a pin in 4:12. In the consolation semifinals, Liddell lost on a pin to Hillsboro’s Melani Monckton.

The team’s next appearance is scheduled for Thursday at Sweet Home.

Boys forced to cancel trip

Philomath High had been scheduled to compete Saturday in the boys version of the Jack Berger Invitational but coach Troy Woosley said illness had decimated the roster and the Warriors had to drop out.

In fact, the wrestling team hasn’t practiced since Wednesday when Woolsey sent the boys home to try to get in some rest-and-recovery time.

The next competition on the schedule for the boys is Thursday at Sweet Home.
