In a matchup involving two playoff teams from a year ago, Scio High School came into Philomath Monday night and took three close sets over the Warriors, 25-23, 25-23, 25-23.
The Warriors (0-5) will continue nonconference play at 6 p.m. Thursday with a trip to Eugene to face defending state champion Marist Catholic. The Spartans won their first four matches this season and will play Tuesday at Stayton before hosting the Warriors.

Philomath was unable to take a set from Scio in the Monday night matchup. The Loggers are coming off a 16-8 season from a year ago, which included an appearance in the 3A playoffs, and had lost two close matches early this season to Dayton and Blanchet Catholic — two unbeatens.

Meanwhile, the Warriors have been through a difficult stretch against teams with a combined 14-4 record heading into the match. Junior Shaylee May and sophomore Nora Stanley shared team-high honors for kills with 11 each. Junior Avery Smith stepped into the No. 1 setter role — senior Ashleigh Brown was out with an injury — and had 12 assists. Junior Taylor Hudson had strong play at the net with three blocks.

Following Philomath’s trip to Marist, the team will host Junction City Sept. 19 before getting into Oregon West Conference play Sept. 24 at Sweet Home.
