Labor Day has roots that date back to 1882 in New York City and is observed on the first Monday in September as “an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers” according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s website.
Did you know that Oregon was the first state to pass a law recognizing Labor Day on Feb. 21, 1887? Other states followed and it became a federal holiday in 1894. History lessons aside, it’s also part of a weekend to relax an extra day before heading back to work or sending the kids to school for the coming academic year.
Here’s a rundown of Philomath events and activities for Labor Day weekend — defined here as 6 p.m. Friday through Monday — along with a selected few from neighboring communities.
Friday, Aug. 30
