Editor’s note: According to family information published online, Minerva Jane Neal was born April 5, 1846, in Monroe County, Illinois, to W.C. and Elisabeth Neal. Census records show that she married John S. Hart in the 1860s and relocated to Oregon at some point in the 1880s or 1890s. By the time the 1900 census was taken, she lived in Falls City with her husband. By 1910, they were living near Philomath. A certificate of death filed with the Oregon State Board of Health shows that acute myocarditis contributed to her death. Her husband, John Swift Hart, served in the Civil War with the 5th Cavalry out of Illinois. He died at age 84 on Jan. 14, 1926, and is buried next to her.
