Philomath and Blodgett students in grades K-5 will transition to a new math curriculum this fall following formal adoption last week by the Philomath School Board.
McGraw Hill’s Reveal Math will be fully implemented for the 2026-27 school year at Clemens Primary, Philomath Elementary and Blodgett Elementary. In addition, The Math Learning Center’s Number Corner materials will continue to be used for grades K-1.
Superintendent Susan Halliday stressed the importance of aligning math curriculum.
“Our biggest thing was wanting to establish a set of instructional materials that were on a K-5 continuum that were aligned and not split apart,” Halliday said at the Feb. 19 meeting. “We’ve been operating since 2019 — and not in a bad way — with one program for kindergarten and first grade and a different program for second through fifth grade.”
Mathematical coherence, reducing the “third-grade dip” among young students and more effective professional learning for teachers were also cited as factoring into the advantages of the new curriculum.
A curriculum committee provided examples of the instructional materials to board members and spoke in detail about its recommendation to make the change to Reveal Math along with continued use of Number Corner.
Principal Abby Couture and teacher Sunny Bennett of Clemens Primary, and Principal Eric Beasley and teacher Emily Helpenstell of Philomath Elementary participated in the presentation at the meeting.
The curriculum comes with an annual cost of $100,000. Based on an estimated student count of 575 students, the cost averages $28.99 per student annually over six years, which is the typical curriculum adoption cycle.
Halliday said the school district has up to $75,000 available out of the general fund and up to $45,000 out of the Student Investment Account to cover the purchase.
The board adopted the materials on a 5-0 vote.
