The Philomath Frolic and Rodeo’s three-day competition featured 233 competitors and $44,484 in total purse payout, the Northwest Professional Rodeo Association reported.

Two bull riders stayed aboard to earn money — Justice Forsythe of Montesano, Washington and Ky Bothum of Fruitland, Idaho. Forsythe scored an 83 aboard B Bar D’s Cool Aces for a $2,677 payout. Forsythe is in first place in the NPRA standings with $7,343 in earnings this year.

Bothum, the runner-up, scored a 73 aboard Shaniko Red, which brought him $1,785. Bothum is sitting in third place in the association’s bull-riding standings.

In bareback riding, Kyle Bounds of Harrisburg and Tyrel Holmes of Spray were co-winners with scores of 85 — each winning $1,054. Bounds also brought in another $756 with a third-place score of 84. Holmes and Bounds are ranked 1-2 in the NPRA standings.

Sharon Gow of Roseburg won the barrel racing competition with a time of 17.69 seconds, which was good for a $1,495 payout. Two others earned $1,000-plus with runner-up Lily Hallett of Tenino, Washington finishing with a time of 17.71 ($1,300) and Amber Hoffman of Chehalis, Washington, in third at 17.83 ($1,105).

The breakaway roping competition was close with five contestants turning in times under 3 seconds led by the 2.30 by Adriene Steffen of Sisters, who won $1,406. Jaycee Campbell of Echo and Cidney Estes of Hermiston tied for second at 2.60 seconds with each bringing in $1,131. Steffen ranks second in the NPRA.

LaVern Bornteger of Elsmere, Nebraska, won the saddle bronc riding competition with a score of 87 and a payout of $1,266 — his top performance on the circuit. The runner-up, Seth Hart of St. Helens, had an 81 for a $1,048 payout.

In steer wrestling, Cord Gomes of Antelope was the winner with a time of 5.7 seconds, good for $728. NPRA season standings leader Russell Cardoza of Terrebonne was the runner-up at 6.3 seconds for $606.

Jake Raley (header) and Cardoza (heeler) had a time of 5.8 seconds in team roping for a winning payout of $1,093. The pair is sitting in first place in the NPRA standings. In tie-down roping, Tate Gentry of Heppner was the lone entrant under 10 seconds at 9.7 for a winning payout of $1,116.

In the novice divisions, Rowdy Fischer of Bend was the saddle bronc winner and Cayden Engen of Springfield won bareback riding. Fischer had a score of 68 ($587) and Engen, who leads the circuit, scored a 73 ($1,116).

Official rodeo attendance figures were not immediately available but both the Friday and Saturday performances were sold out.
