The allowable window for residential backyard burning will come to a close June 15 and with the rainy season transitioning into dry and windy conditions, Philomath Fire and Rescue is advising folks to exercise caution with any last-minute burning.

“Burn permits are required through the end of the season,” Deputy Fire Chief Rich Saalsaa said. “Pay attention to the DEQ burn advisory each day as the hours tend to change. Keep your piles manageable so that you can complete the burn within the allowable hours.”

The Department of Environmental Quality issues the start and stop times for when burns can take place.

“Be sure you have cleared at least 3 feet around the piles — more if there is any significant wind,” Saalsaa said, adding that if winds reach 10 mph, burning is discouraged. “Stay with your burn piles when there is an active flame. Call 911 any time the fire spreads beyond the pile.”
