In a break from conference play over the weekend, the Philomath High School volleyball team won one of four matches in the tough Mt. Hood Invite at Sam Barlow High School.
The Dalles, which is ranked No. 6 and now has a 12-4 record, beat the Warriors 25-13, 25-22.
Sandy, a 6A school with a 12-7 record, edged Philomath 27-26, 25-20. Estacada, which has a record of 8-6 so far this season, beat Philomath 25-17, 25-23.
Philomath’s victory came over McKay, a 5A school that is winless this season, by a score of 25-11, 25-10.
Assistant coach Shelly Brown took over as head coach for Philomath in the tournament with Whitney Rasmussen not available to make the trip.
“Barlow is a tough tournament and we played really great teams close,” Brown said. “We have specific things that we are focused on improving every day we play and we continued to do that yesterday (Saturday).”
Sophomore Nora Stanley had 24 kills and junior Shaylee May had 21 kills in the tournament to lead Warrior hitters. Senior Ashleigh Brown finished with 44 assists from her setter position. Junior libero Isabelle Muir had four aces from the service line.
“The girls played hard all day and our defense made good adjustments to tough hitters,” Brown said. “Our offense made adjustments to really good blockers and tough defenses.”
Philomath (5-10) gets back into Oregon West Conference action Tuesday with a 6 p.m. home match against Newport (3-10).
