Philomath High School swept the boys and girls team titles at the Aaron and Marie Jones Invitational on Saturday at the McKenzie Community Track and Field Complex with the boys scoring 144 points and the girls posting 107 to lead their respective fields.
The boys team won going away, outdistancing runner-up Cottage Grove by 29 points. The girls title was closer with Philomath holding off Sisters, 107-97.
The Warriors produced 11 individual or relay event winners between the two squads.
On the boys side, senior Lukas Hernandez turned in one of the day’s most impressive performances by winning the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 6:45.20 and adding a third-place finish in the 800 meters in 2:02.90. Junior Galen Murch was runner-up in the steeplechase in 7:19.74.
Junior Kaden Howard won the 100-meter dash in 11.38 seconds and added a third-place finish in the long jump at 19 feet, 7.25 inches and third in the triple jump at 12.27 meters. Sophomore Dreyton Nuño won the 400 meters in 52.62 seconds.
Among other top-three individual finishes on the track, junior Bryce Hruska finished second in both hurdles events, running 16.62 in the 110s and 43.88 in the 300. Senior Leo Pausch placed second in the 1,500 in 4:15.25.

In the throws, junior Jamin Peters won the shot put at 14.48 meters and senior Josiah Peters took the javelin with a throw of 53.80 meters. Sophomore Nathan Seits was second in the high jump at 1.78 meters and third in the long jump at 18-10.
The boys 4-by-100 relay team of Hruska, Nuño, Howard and sophomore Rowan Jessen won in 45.94. The 4-by-400 squad of Hruska, Pausch, freshman Braeden Colvin and Nuño was third in 3:49.36.
For the girls, freshman Sienna Bushnell won the 800 in 2:28.73 and was a key leg on both relay teams. Sophomore Cassidy Smart won the 1,500 in 4:48.50 and also took the 2,000 steeplechase in 7:35.60. Smart’s steeplechase time took 1:55 off the school record, which was set 20 years ago, and is the third-fastest in the state behind two 6A runners.
Junior Jordyn Hood won the discus at 29.54 meters and contributed to the relay efforts, while sophomore Kya Bolton won the triple jump at 10.10 meters.

The girls 4-by-400 relay team of Bushnell, sophomore Ava Oster, sophomore Reagan Nuño and Smart was second in 4:19.63. The 4-by-100 squad of Nuño, Bushnell, Hood and Bolton was third in 53.58.
Other top-three finishes included Nuño’s second in the high jump at 1.42 meters and senior Syd Clark’s third in the steeplechase in 9:25.00.
According to the meet’s director, there were 312 personal records and 18 meet records set at the meet, which included the participation of more than 20 schools.
Philomath’s next competition is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Newport for a tri-meet with the Cubs and Cascade.
