The Philomath High School wrestling team placed third out of 14 teams with just seven athletes competing at the Screamin’ Eagle tournament Saturday. Six of the seven Warriors had top-three finishes at the Santiam Christian event, including three who won individual titles.

Senior Riley Barrett continued his undefeated season by winning the 150-pound weight class. Barrett recorded a first-period technical fall over Lakeview’s Samuel Jacobs, 15-0, then pinned Scio’s Syrus Diaz in just 52 seconds in the semifinals. He capped his day by pinning Columbia River’s Jack Givens in 40 seconds in the championship match.

Fellow senior Porter Compton also went 3-0 to claim the 157-pound title. Compton pinned La Pine’s Elijah Martinez in 1:49, won by major decision over Siuslaw’s Ali Ijaz, 17-8, and captured the championship with a 9-0 major decision over Lakeview’s Riggs Lym.

At 165 pounds, senior Liam Bennett won his weight class with a 2-0 record, pinning Corvallis’ Rafael Orzech in 1:16 before finishing off Columbia River’s Jude Vela in 1:07 for the title.

Seniors Lake Mulberry and Derick Kohn had runner-up finishes at 190 and 215 pounds, respectively.

Mulberry went 2-1, pinning Oakland’s Eli Powell in 1:02 and Siuslaw’s Gage Mills in 1:57 before falling to Santiam Christian’s Jordan Ness by decision, 5-1, in the championship match.

Kohn also finished 2-1, pinning Oakland’s Hollis Kizer in 1:11 and edging Elmira’s Jonah Cooper by decision, 1-0, in the semifinals. He dropped the title match to Siuslaw’s Jacob Mann by technical fall.

Senior Brayden Williams also had a top-three finish on the team by placing third at 126 pounds. Williams went 2-1, pinning Siuslaw’s Thomas Gentry in 2:19 before losing by technical fall to Oakland’s Gaige Jakubiec, 19-3 (4:00), in the semifinals. He bounced back to claim third with a technical fall over Santiam Christian’s Hunter Glazier, 17-0.

Columbia River (Washington) won the team title with 165.5 points, followed by host Santiam Christian with 152.5. Philomath finished with 148 points, ahead of fourth-place Scio (140.5) and fifth-place Elmira (128.5).

Philomath returns to action Friday at the Tod Surman Tournament at South Albany High School.
