The Philomath High School boys soccer team had to settle for a scoreless tie Tuesday against Cascade in an Oregon West Conference matchup on the school’s rural campus near Turner.

“We were struggling with illness and injury but still should’ve won,” PHS coach Dave Ellis said.

Ellis said he thought his team scored on a header at one point during the contest but the referee ruled otherwise.

Standout players for the Warriors, Ellis said, were sophomore Dreyton Nuño and senior Caleb Babcock.

Philomath goes to 8-3-1 on the season and 4-3-1 in the Oregon West Conference. Stayton leads the league with a 6-0-1 record and North Marion, Newport and Philomath are battling for the runner-up spot.

The Warriors play both of those teams to finish the regular season — North Marion at home Thursday (3:30 p.m. start) and at Newport on Oct. 28 (7 p.m. start). The team will recognize its seniors before Thursday’s game.

For the Cougars (3-6-3, 0-5-3), it was the team’s second straight scoreless tie. Philomath beat Cascade earlier this season, 3-0.
